Researchers from the Department of Geography and ICTA‑UAB have already started their work, holding their first internal project meeting in Barcelona.
They will do so by collecting personal stories and applying participatory methodologies such as photovoice, which captures the voices of the community and their visual experiences in photographs that reflect their personal perception of exposure to pollution and their role in producing emissions.
This work will provide essential insights into the social dimension of pollution and support the development of more inclusive and effective solutions.
Scienseed is the communication agency leading the dissemination and outreach activities of the project.
In science, discovering is only part of the journey. Sharing scientific advances with society is just as important. By making research accessible, engaging, and understandable, we help bridge the gap between science and society. Because an informed society is a stronger, more resilient, and better society.
The School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy from UCD is an expert in environmental noise, urban exposure modelling and public health impacts. Its research focuses on understanding how transport-related noise affects populations and how these impacts can be assessed and integrated into policy frameworks.
Within ATMOPOLIS, this knowledge contributes to the advancement of noise pollution analysis alongside air quality analysis, helping to better capture the combined environmental pressures experienced in urban settings.
By linking environmental modelling with health outcomes and policy applications, this work supports a more comprehensive and evidence-based approach to improving urban well-being.
Imperial leads the work on understanding how people are exposed to pollution, both through measurements and real-life experience. The team brings valuable expertise and instrumentation to this work.
As a leading multidisciplinary university, its work supports global sustainability challenges by connecting research, policy and industry.
Imperial team is led by Prof. Ian Hamilton and by Dr. Shih-Che Hsu.
Professor Ian Hamilton focuses on study how decarbonisation and environmental exposures in buildings affect health and wellbeing.
Dr. Shih-Che Hsu is focused on how climate change policies affect resident in the built environment.
The Faculty of Public Health and Policy works to improve health and reduce inequalities worldwide. It brings together three departments whose work closely aligns with the goals of ATMOPOLIS. Their research covers health policy and systems, including economic evaluation and global health; the organisation and quality of health services; and the social and environmental determinants of health.
This multidisciplinary perspective is essential to better understand how environmental exposures such as air and noise pollution affect health, and how policies and systems can respond effectively.
GAP brings a strong citizen-centred and action-oriented perspective to the project, helping to reinforce one of ATMOPOLIS’ core ideas: tackling air and noise pollution requires not only scientific evidence, but also public engagement, awareness and collective action.
By strengthening the link between environmental challenges and community engagement, GAP helps us advance more inclusive pathways towards cleaner, healthier and more liveable cities.
As the public authority representing London, one of the five pilot cities in our project, GLA will play an important role in bringing the perspective of urban governance and public policy into the project. Their involvement will help ensure that the knowledge and tools developed respond to real city needs and support more effective decision-making on air and noise pollution.
By working together with cities, researchers and communities, ATMOPOLIS aims to advance integrated, society-centred solutions to reduce pollution exposure, improve health, and support climate goals.
Tampere university is recognized for its outstanding teaching and research, and it partners with hundreds of universities and organizations around the world.
Since our project aims to study not only the pollution outdoors, but also inside the buildings, the Tampere University, Faculty of Built Environment (BEN) has a huge function in this. This investigation centre works to make a significant impact on the social, economic, and environmental aspects of our society. To do that, researchers are fully aware that decision-making about the construction and maintenance of the buildings has long-term consequences.
Jonathon Taylor is one of those researchers and the leader of the Urban Physics Research Group in the Department of Civil Engineering. One of the goals of his investigation is to support the sustainability transition in cities. To do that he uses building, physics simulations, data-driven modelling, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
As one of the project’s pilot cities, Łódź brings a highly valuable urban perspective: a mid-sized city with an industrial past and specific environmental challenges.
Its contribution will help us better understand how air and noise pollution interact in different urban settings, and how to design responses tailored to local realities.
The Institute for Public Health of Sarajevo Canton is one of our pilot cities. They bring public health expertise, strong knowledge of the local context and an essential perspective on how pollution affects health and wellbeing
Sarajevo also offers a particularly relevant setting for studying real-life exposure to air and noise pollution in complex urban environments.
Podgorica brings an important perspective on how to address air and noise pollution in smaller urban areas and across different socioeconomic contexts.
As one of ATMOPOLIS' pilot cities, its contribution strengthens the project's commitment to developing transferable, inclusive solutions adapted to diverse urban realities.
With extensive expertise in atmospheric science and environmental monitoring, their contribution focuses on atmospheric modelling and interface development. They will help transform complex environmental data into meaningful and accessible insights.
The team from MGU contributes expertise in social sciences, with a particular focus on pro-environmental behaviour, education, and community engagement.
Their work within ATMOPOLIS will support the analysis of how different social groups perceive and experience exposure to air and noise pollution, as well as how cultural, behavioural and social factors influence these dynamics.
By integrating these social dimensions with environmental data, APS plays a key role in advancing the project’s interdisciplinary approach and in identifying pathways for both top-down policy action and bottom-up behavioural change.
