Helping Europe move toward zero
pollution with evidence-based decisions and empowered communities

The Health Burden of Air and Noise Pollution

Millions of Europeans live in areas with hazardous air and noise pollution levels that damage their health and wellbeing. The EU-funded research project ATMOPOLIS turns air and noise pollution data, including people’s lived experience, into practical guidance for policies and everyday action toward zero-pollution cities.

Air and noise, outdoors and indoors

ATMOPOLIS studies pollution in the places people actually live, move, and spend time, including for those most vulnerable and at-risk.

Solutions for different types of cities

Research in London, Lodz, Sarajevo, Podgorica, and Tampere provides evidence across a variety of cities across Europe

Insights from people and policymakers

ATMOPOLIS engages citizens, communities and city officials to understand how it influences their behaviours, concerns, and policy decisions.

From pollution data to action

Integrating efforts across disciplines, and evidence and action
at the individual, community, and city-scale.

People

ATMOPOLIS measures pollution exposure across individuals homes and as they travel, and studies how their understanding of pollution impacts their behaviours and willingness to change.

Communities

We use community big-data on noise pollution to go beyond decibels to measure impact of noise on citizens and develop ways for citizens to shape noise assessments.

Cities

ATMOPOLIS will model pollution reduction, health impacts, and economic cost, and climate impacts of different policies, across European cities allowing decisions to be taken that provide the maximum impact at lowest cost.

Action

ATMOPOLIS will study how to translating new knowledge into action and change at individual, community, and city-levels.

Mission

ATMOPOLIS aims to translate integrated evidence on air and noise pollution into action at two complementary levels.

Top-down

For policymakers and public authorities. Development of a decision-support tool for exploring and comparing pollution mititgations policies and measures.

Bottom-up

For policymakers and public authorities. Development of a decision-support tool for exploring and comparing pollution mititgations policies and measures.

ATMOPOLIS project

An innovative study involving leading academics, local and knowledge actors and citizens to understand
air and noise pollution and to develop an integrated
tool to evaluate the health and climate impacts of mitigation policies.
